Sandstone and granite, used in the Capitol and White House, were quarried in Maryland and Virginia. These types of stone are still being extracted from those areas. Educational, financial and research industries are found inside the city. Tourism is a large part of Washington D.C.’s economy. Each year, millions of tourists come to the city to visit its historic landmarks, museums, and historic buildings.
