There are few agricultural products that will grow in New Mexico because of the lack of irrigation. New Mexico’s most fertile land is used for cattle and sheep grazing on large ranches in the cities of Clovis and Lincoln, which is 50 miles northwest of Roswell. Hay is grown in the city of La Mesa, sorghum in Clovis, onions and potatoes in Farmington, and dairy products from Clovis. New Mexico’s mineral deposits are important to its economy. Manganese is mined in Lincoln, copper, silver and turquoise are mined in and around Silver City. Oil and gas are extracted from the San Juan Basin in northwest Mexico and the Permian Basin 275 miles east of Las Cruces. Manufacturing such as food and mineral processing, chemical production, electrical equipment, high-tech products are produced in Albuquerque. Each year, thousands of tourists visit New Mexico’s Carlsbad Caverns National Park and Aztec Ruins National Monuments making tourism a chief source of income for the state.
