According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every 40 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke. Every 4 minutes someone in the United States dies of a stroke. Strokes are the fifth cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the United States. They occur when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain becomes blocked by a clot or bursts. Without blood and oxygen, brain cells die. Eighty percent of strokes can be prevented by lowering blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight, and not smoking. Stroke patients who receive treatment within three hours of their first symptom suffer less disability three months after a stroke than those who do not.
