Prior Art, Obviousness, and the America Invents Act in 2012Patent reform has arrived: what will be its impact on those touchstones of patentability, prior art and obviousness? 102 was already a complicated concept for patent practitioners, having undergone evolving interpretations in the PTO and CAFC. How will the AIA now complicate matters further? How does the concept of “prior art” and circumstance collide in the 21st century? How does prior art on the web impact the practice? What is truly enabled? This program will allow you to obtain an essential working understanding of this complicated statute, including recent re-interpretations, case law, and a look at the statutory revisions. Meanwhile, obviousness, the most common reason any application is rejected or patent held invalid, is changing as a result of KSR (already 5 years old). Explore 103 from inside and outside the PTO as both the CAFC and PTO try to shoehorn their past decisions into a KSR pigeonhole! What you will learn: -Publication/Accessibility - on the web, on the shelf, in the mail, "routine" practices; -The four steps of (d); -Ex parte 102 (g): abandon, suppress, conceal, and notebooks; -Actual vs. constructive reduction to practice; -A close look at 102 (e); -What issues are raised by successive common owner filings? --The new AIA 102 and its dates. What is the new "grace period"? -Is it truly a world wide landscape of "filing date" prior art? -A thorough review of the recent KSR "guidelines" and "timelines;" -Examine the impact of proper and improper benefit claims on the prior art date of a reference and the effective filing date of the application being examined; -How do you apply 103 post-KSR and the 2010 PTO Guidelines? The program is geared to patent lawyers who have some familiarity with existing 35 USC Sections 102/103 and regularly work with the statute in either litigation or patent prosecution. The course will advance the knowledge of all attendees from their respective starting points and provide new insights into the statute, recent amendments, and case law.

Fetal Programming and Environmental Exposures: Implications for Prenatal Care and Pre-Term BirthOver the past two decades, it has been increasingly recognized that prenatal environmental and pharmaceutical exposures can adversely influence fetal programming, which plays a role in pre-term birth and is linked to lasting adverse health effects and the risk of adult health disorders such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease. The New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS) and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center are jointly presenting a 1.5-day scientific symposium to explore recent discoveries, challenges, and future research directions that further our understanding of the complex environmental and genetic factors, and gene-gene as well as gene-environment interactions responsible for fetal programming in utero and pre-term birth. This conference will provide a neutral forum for discussion to multidisciplinary science investigators such as toxicologists, obstetricians, neonatologists, pediatricians, endocrinologists, epidemiologists, public health and regulatory experts from basic research to clinical settings, including experts in embryonic, fetal, and childhood development, reproductive medicine and biology, and environmental toxicology. Conference attendees will explore the impact of genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors on the stages of prenatal development, including pre-implantation, implantation, decidualization, placentation, fetal programming in utero, and links to pre-term birth and other pregnancy disorders. Experts with diverse perspectives will engage in a dialogue about possible ways in which we can better predict, assess, and decrease the effects of environmental and genetic factors that predispose to adverse fetal outcomes and pre-term birth, thus lowering the enormous associated physical, psychological, and economic costs.

Mitochondrial Trafficking and Function in Neuronal Health and DiseaseThe regulated trafficking, morphology and function of mitochondria is essential for providing ATP at the correct spatial location to power neural computation. Mitochondria can also sequester and buffer Ca2+, and also play a key role in apoptotic signaling, so their positioning affects local regulation of Ca2+ dynamics and hence neural signaling, and possibly also neuronal death. In neurons, the concentration of mitochondria in specific regions such as growth cones and synapses is important for correct neuronal function and development. Moreover mutations in proteins regulating mitochondrial trafficking and function compromise neuronal development and the formation, function and plasticity of synapses. Consequently, defective mitochondrial trafficking is increasingly implicated in neurological diseases. This meeting aims to provide the latest insights into understanding the molecular mechanisms that control mitochondrial trafficking, dynamics and function in neurons. How altered mitochondrial trafficking and function contributes to neuronal dysfunction in neurological diseases (e.g. Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases) where disrupted mitochondrial trafficking and function have been shown to occur will be a key focus.

Water Quality and the EnvironmentWater quality plays an integral role in our lives. Water can reflect global history, and current land and water use practices impact water quality and aquatic ecology in lakes, rivers, and groundwater. In this institute, we will explore current global water quality issues as well understand how water quality is changing Minnesota's lakes and streams. Participants will learn about water as a basic human right, connections between water and human health including water borne diseases, and case studies of watersheds in both local and global contexts. In order to be prepared to teach global water quality issues, participants will learn about a variety of curricula such as Project Wet, learn about water curricula associated with a portable planetarium, and learn how to use insects as a way to measure water quality. The institute will offer field trips to provide experiential learning. This summer's institute is intended for K-14 educators interested in water quality and incorporating this topic into their teaching.
