Keystone Symposia: Synapses and Circuits: From Formation to DiseaseA fundamental goal of neuroscience is to understand the molecular, cellular and activity-based mechanisms that control the formation and maintenance of neural circuits and determine how these mechanisms become compromised in neurodevelopmental, psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. Over the past two decades, molecular neuroscientists have identified key molecules and mechanisms that underlie synapse development, activity and stability. Meanwhile, the study of neuronal circuits has been revolutionized by new methods to visualize and map circuits in living animals, as well as the development of approaches to control neuronal activity using optical approaches (so called optogenetics). Finally, disease researchers have identified genes associated with neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. Animal models of these diseases are proving useful to understand how dysfunction of affected genes and proteins contributes to disease pathology. Although these fields are working on the same processes, no small highly interactive meeting brings these three groups together. The Keystone Symposia meeting on Synapses and Circuits: From Formation to Disease will address this need by bringing together leaders working on synapse development and function, circuit structure and function and the study of brain disease. We anticipate that mutually beneficial insights will emerge from discussions at this meeting.

Keystone Symposia: Regenerative Tissue Engineering and TransplantationTissue engineering and regenerative medicine is a dynamic, translational research field that amalgamates life sciences, engineering and clinical medicine for the purpose of restoring structure and function to diseased, damaged or injured tissues and organs. Current efforts focus on the application of stem and progenitor cells, bioactive factors and biomaterial scaffolds in transplantation procedures to affect regenerative therapies. Breakthroughs in bladder and tracheal reconstruction and highly promising approaches for solid organ regeneration as well as musculoskeletal and nerve repair have been achieved. Effective cell sourcing, optimal assembly and fabrication of tissue-derived and synthetic biomaterial scaffolds, and targeted regulation of therapeutic and immunomodulatory functions of stem cells represent some of the current challenges in this field. In this Keystone Symposia meeting on Regenerative Tissue Engineering and Transplantation, exciting technological and intellectual advances in the field will be synthesized by expert scientists, engineers and clinicians to assess and expand the landscape in regenerative engineering and transplantation. Opportunities for interdisciplinary interactions will be significantly enhanced by the concurrent meeting on Mechanisms of Whole Organ Regeneration, which will share an opening and closing keynote address as well as two plenary sessions with this meeting. More specifically, the pairing of these two meetings represents a highly unusual opportunity for cross-talk between the more applications-driven field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, and the very basic research being explored in the field of whole organ regeneration.

Sunday, April 1, 2012 to Friday, April 6, 2012
Keystone Symposia: Mechanisms of Whole Organ RegenerationThe regeneration of organs and organ systems after injury is widely, but unevenly, distributed among animals. Why organ regeneration is not shared by all animals, and whether mechanisms may or may not be conserved among those animals that can regenerate remain open questions. In recent years, the use of a wider range of model organisms and an increasing ability to use genetic tools to study regeneration has spurred significant progress in our understanding of animal regenerative biology. This meeting aims to delineate the molecular and cellular biological basis of regeneration by highlighting, comparing and contrasting the differences and similarities in regenerative capabilities and mechanisms among diverse animal species. How these biological findings may inform regenerative medicine and stem-cell biology and therapeutics will be considered and discussed. Opportunities for interdisciplinary interactions will be significantly enhanced by the concurrent meeting on Regenerative Tissue Engineering and Transplantation, which will share an opening and closing keynote address as well as two plenary sessions with this meeting.

Social Computing TrackThe relentless development of Internet technologies in recent years has radically altered the landscape for human/social interaction. Characterized by flexibility, user-friendliness and simplicity, Web applications such as wikis, blogs, microblogs, video sharing platforms and social networking sites offer rich, interactive user experiences that facilitate community-based knowledge sharing and collaboration. Previously, users visited static web pages and accessed institutional content that mirrored print-based publications. Now, users are provided with the tools and platforms to undertake their own collaborative content creation and distribution. With the Internet rapidly taking on the role of a global marketplace for the exchange of ideas, experiences and knowledge, an interesting research area has emerged: social computing. Social computing lies at the intersection of social behavior and computing systems. It focuses on the use of technology to create social conventions and contexts, as well as the new relationships and power structures that result. Three widely-agreed tenets of social computing are (i) the shift of innovation from a top-down to a bottom-up model; (ii) the shift of value from ownership to experiences; and (iii) the shift of power from institutions to communities. Social computing (also known as Web 2.0 and social media) has drawn much interest in academia, the information technology industry and among Internet users. This track at ITNG 2012 is therefore timely, and will serve as a platform for those researching this area. Submissions may include research, system, evaluation, policy and position papers.
