The National Marine Fisheries Service was concerned about the impact of dredging in the Columbia River entrance on salinity in the coastal ocean. My PhD thesis and subsequent work commissioned by the Army Corps of Engineers demonstrated that dredging would change near surface salinity by less than one part per thousand, a negligible impact. Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) maintains a sewage treatment plant near Huntington Beach California, and local environmentalists were concerned about the impact of the sewage outfall on the beach. Marlene Noble led an extensive study of the issue, and I organized a peer review of the study. The outfall was exonerated, but OCSD decided to upgrade the sewage treatment plant to federal standards. North Carolina's Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) builds artificial reefs as broodstock sanctuaries for oysters. Funded by North Carolina Sea Grant, I studied regional currents and predicted transport patterns of oyster larvae. The DMF is building a new sanctuary at the location I suggested.
