I have 20 years of experience, and specialize in the field of robotics with specific knowledge in the areas of industrial automation and assembly, machine dynamics and control and human-robot interaction. I have published on such topics as robot manipulation, control theory and swarm robotics. I have been working in robotics research and practice for 20 years. My undergraduate degree was in electrical engineering my PhD was in computer science/robotics, and after spending a year working at a government lab in Japan, I have been a professor in mechanical engineering since 1997. I am currently associate chair of the department.My own research is funded primarily by the Office of Naval Research, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation. My research focuses on the following areas. (1) Robot manipulation and motion planning, and applications to automated manufacturing and industrial automation. (2) Feedback control of dynamic systems. (3) Human-robot interactive systems, such as assist devices, haptic interfaces, and prosthetics. (4) Mobile sensor networks and swarming robots. (5) Bio-inspired sensing (including novel electric field sensing) and locomotion. My work in these areas has been recognized by best paper awards and career awards from NSF and IEEE.I am a Senior Editor of a leading international journal in robotics. In this role, I personally make accept and reject decisions on over 120 submitted papers a year (acceptance rate approximately 24%), based on recommendations from reviewers and our associate editors. This requires broad knowledge of many areas of robotics and automation. I also currently serve as a science and technology consultant to DARPA, have been a member of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society administrative and executive boards, have been involved in the organization of several major international conferences, have acted as a reviewer for various state, national, and international funding agencies, and have consulted in a variety of capacities (legal and technical). I am also a co-author of the best-selling textbook in robot motion planning, and a co-author of the chapter on robotic manipulation.
