Road Traffic Accidents cause massive suffering and loss in all corners of the world. In higher-income countries road traffic accidents are among the top ten leading causes of injury and death. In less developed countries the proportion of deaths and injuries caused by traffic accidents is much greater. According to WHO research, deaths from non-communicable diseases are expected to climb to 49.7 million per annum by 2020 with traffic accidents are the main cause of this rise. At this level road traffic injuries will take third place in the rank order of "disease burden" by the year 2020. In many cases traffic accidents can be avoided by using best practice techniques in managing the safety and risk aspects of a transport operation.
