Building High-Performing Advisory Boards
A good Advisory Board should consist of sharp strategic minds to help the executive team compete during the next generation of growth and market change. The sole objective of each seasoned professional sitting on the Advisory Board is to provide objective guidance and oversight, to help the company achieve goals and fulfill its strategic vision. Advisory Board members should have no hidden agenda or preference to overcome.
The purpose of the successful Advisory Board is to assist the company in making solid decisions. With this coaching and guidance, the management team is less likely to get stuck on, or table, a critical decision until a minor issue becomes a real problem.
A successful Advisory Board will contain:
- Strong Leadership - Advisory Boards should intelligently tackle problems to find the right solution for the situation at hand
- Defined Purpose - The goals of the Advisory Board should be set forth and doggedly pursued
- Defined Roles - Each advisor should have a specific function and add unique value in that capacity
- Board Process - Advisors should operate in an organized, systematic manner
- Culture - The greatest professionalism should be evident in all Advisory Board activities.
- Advisor Competence - When constructing Advisory Boards, members should be vetted and selected based upon proven track records
